Sports Physical Therapy

Sports Physical Therapy is a specialized practice that focuses on prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement of the physically-active individual. Our physical therapists are highly skilled in evaluation of acute and chronic injuries. A hallmark of sports physical therapy practice is the assessment of surgical and non-surgical neuromusculoskeletal injuries. Included in this is the functional assessment of the individual post-injury to assist in a safe return to activity. The physical therapists at BSR Physical Therapy work collaboratively with athletes of various sports in order to facilitate a safe return to sport and improvement in performance. Athletes who routinely seek out the expertise of our physical therapists include those involved in baseball, softball, basketball, cross-fit, track and field, running, volleyball, soccer, wrestling, gymnastics, cheer leading, dance, golf, football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis, swimming, surfing, and other water sports.

Screening Athletes:  Physical therapists at BSR offer free injury prevention screenings to athletes and teams. We conduct individual screenings at both clinics and our physical therapists can also perform screenings in a group setting onsite at team practices. Athletes will be screened using the Functional Movement Screen,Upper & Lower Body Dynamic Balance (Y Balance Test), Core Muscle Testing, Jump and Landing Mechanics, Hop Testing, and other physical performance tests as indicated.

Corrective Exercise: Athletes identified as “high risk” for injury should be instructed in corrective exercise. No program can eliminate future injury but research shows individually tailored corrective exercise programs can reduce injury risk1. Athletes can attend training sessions with a physical therapist to develop a corrective program targeting their specific deficits.

Prevent Injury & Enhance Performance (PEP): The PEP program consists of a warm-up, stretching, strengthening, plyometrics, and sport specific agility drills to address deficits in strength and coordination. The program is instructed by physical therapists onsite as a warm-up before team practice. The program typically takes 15-20 minutes to complete. Several well conducted research studies have shown this program to reduce the risk for ACL injury in young athletes2,3.
